81 years ago in 1937, Bernard O’Reilly heroically rescued two survivors from a Stinson Model A plane that went down in Lamington National Park, Queensland, which saw him trek two days through dense rainforest before miraculously finding the wreckage. It’s now a famous moment in Australian history, and has spawned a popular trek through Lamington National Park that can be taken up by curious trekkers and adventurers.
The Stinson Walk is the chance to retrace Bernard O’Reilly’s heroic steps through Lamington National Park, in which he made his way through dense subtropical rainforest to find the survivors of the Stinson Model A wreckage. Presented by O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, the Stinson Walk commemorates the historic Australian event as well as celebrates Bernard O’Reilly’s heroic rescue mission.
Trekkers are invited to embark on two different routes, which include Bernard O’Reilly’s very footsteps (37km) as well as the shorter rescue route (16km). Along each route you’ll enjoy beautiful rainforest and scenic views before you reach the site of the crash and what remains of the Stinson Model A plane wreckage. Both routes will feature a celebratory drink and snack at the end.
Join the Stinson Walk this winter, which will be taking place on August 10 through to August 12.
